"Mamatoto" is Swahili for "mother-child" the concept is that the mother and child are one, that there is no individual word for the mother and the child because they are always together.

The mamatoto philosophy includes responding to all of baby's needs as soon as possible. It is similar to attachment parenting but a little more inclusive and even more compasionate.

Mamatoto's must read book list

"A Ride on Mother's Back: A Day of Babywearing Around the World” by Emery and Durga Bernhard

“Having Faith: An Ecologist's Journey to Motherhood” by Sandra Steingraber

This book was a huge departure from my usual reading. It is a cross between an ecology class and a pregnancy journal. I was NEVER so concerned about what happens to our earth and how it affects me as a mother and my family than after reading this book. It was a real page turner despite the science. I have read it at least 4 times!

“Our Babies, Ourselves : How Biology and Culture Shape the Way We Parent” by Meredith Small

“Spiritual Midwifery” by Ina May Gaskin

Hundreds of real stories from real women about how they gave birth naturally.
